Tree edge

A "Baumkante" (tree edge or live edge) refers to the edge of a piece of furniture that follows the natural growth shape of the tree. This type of edge is most commonly used for tables, giving them a rustic, natural appearance, and due to the varying original growth forms of trees, each piece is unique.

During the production of furniture panels, the bark is removed, and the outer edge is left in the natural wavy state of the tree's growth – in other words, as the tree grew lengthwise. To compensate for excessive unevenness, the edges are usually re-milled and sanded to match the growth form.
Due to the unique growth of each tree, every tree edge differs in shape, grain, and color, making it a true one-of-a-kind. Therefore, live edge tables are genuine unique pieces and a focal point in any dining area, living room, or conference room.

Live edge slabs for tables or other furniture pieces are available in various thicknesses, usually between 23 and 55 mm. The thicker the (table)top, the more striking the live edge appears.
The most commonly used wood species for live edge furniture are oak and acacia; other woods can also be used depending on their stability.

Other terms for "Baumkante" include – sometimes varying regionally – "Waldkante" (forest edge), "Naturkante" (natural edge), Live Edge, "Waldsaum" (forest fringe), and "Fehlkante" (defective edge).
