A computer desk is a desk primarily used for working with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor, where the computer itself is either placed as a desktop under the monitor or stands/hangs under the desk. It is important for a computer desk to allow for ergonomic work to prevent fatigue caused by an unsuitable piece of furniture.
When choosing a computer desk, the following factors, for example, should be considered:
- What size is needed? The size of the computer desk naturally depends on the available space, but even more importantly, on the working style and the materials needed for work. Is the computer itself, with input devices and a printer, sufficient, or do you work with multiple monitors, or just a laptop? Or do you need additional materials, files, paper, writing implements, and a telephone? If the computer desk itself should not be too large, additional storage space can be created with a side table or a storage unit.
- Height: A computer desk should be high enough so that your arms rest on the table surface in front of the keyboard and the mouse can be operated with your arm resting. A height-adjustable tabletop, thanks to a suitable base, allows the table to be set to the most comfortable height. This also allows multiple people and even children to work at the computer workstation.
The optimal height of a computer desk is when you are sitting in the office chair with your knees bent at 90°. Ideally, your forearms and upper arms should also form a 90-degree angle when working. The monitor should be placed so that its top edge is at eye level. Monitor stands can also be used here if necessary. - What material and design should it be? Computer desks are available in a variety of materials, mostly wood, metal, and tables with plastic coating. An unusual design with a long lifespan and robust construction can be found in, for example, live-edge tables with individual table edges. There are special desks available, but a dining table with a wobble-free base can also be used effectively.
- Storage space: A computer desk with drawers and shelves offers additional storage space for office supplies and other items. Special computer desks often also have a side compartment for the computer itself, which then does not get in the way in the footwell.
- Location: The lighting situation is important here; the computer desk should not be placed directly in front of a window where the sun shines. This causes enormous problems during prolonged work with the monitor, as the light glares or falls directly on the monitor. An ideal location is one where the light comes from the side. The table should be positioned accordingly and its construction should be suitable for the location.
Computer desks provide a fixed location for working at the computer and should be designed so that one feels comfortable there for a period of time and can work efficiently and concentratedly.
