Coffee table

A "Salontisch" (parlor table) usually refers to a coffee table, although side tables are sometimes also called parlor tables. The term primarily refers to its placement, the "salon," which, in French-influenced usage, denotes a larger, representative room used as a reception or drawing room. Today, in private residences, a salon usually refers to the living room or possibly a smoking room.
A parlor table is almost always used in combination with armchairs or seating groups and serves as a surface for drinks, snacks, books, games, plants, and other decorative elements.
In the classical style, one finds heavy, dark furniture pieces here, while in more modern households, unique tables with organic table edges, such as a live edge, are also increasingly being used.
Such a table should definitely not only be functional but also look unusual and, in its original sense, representative, emphasizing the furnishing style.

Parlor tables are significantly lower than normal tables, due to their combination with armchairs and sofas. The seat height of the sofa should be the same height or higher than the table itself; a distance of approx. 45 cm between the table and the couch is recommended to be able to get up comfortably while still having the table within reach.

Side tables as parlor tables are often used as additional, flexible storage surfaces. If many guests are expected, side tables can be quickly set up or moved so that there is a parlor table within comfortable reach of each seating element. These smaller tables are generally a little higher than normal coffee tables and are usually used for placing glasses or, for smokers, for ashtrays and smoking accessories.

In addition to the classic parlor table, all kinds of materials are used today for the tabletop and base, including wood, glass, metal, and plastic. Combinations of wooden or glass tabletops and metal frames are often found. There are virtually no restrictions on the shape and format of the table; this is decided by the living style and taste of each individual.
