Unique tables are tables that exist only once in their respective form. For this type of table, the tabletop is almost the only feature that makes solid wood tables unique. Here, the shape and grain of the wood create unique pieces of furniture, as every tree is different and has a special grain.
In the case of a so-called live edge table, not only the grain of the tabletop but also the table edge is unique. With such a table, the slab is cut in the direction of the tree's longitudinal growth, and then the outer layer, i.e., bark and cork, is cut or sanded away down to the growth layer (cambium) of the tree. Since the longitudinal growth of every tree is also different, this results in unique outer table edges that are naturally curved in an organic form.
Unique tables made in this live edge style are absolutely on trend today and can be used as dining tables and coffee tables in living areas, and as desks and conference room tables in business environments – the look is definitely an eye-catcher and suits almost any interior style.
Of course, other pieces of furniture can also be fitted with live edge wood, ranging from benches, shelves, and chests of drawers to windowsills.
Incidentally, with live edge tables, the thicker the tabletop, the more impressive it is. Table tops are usually between approx. 25 and 50 mm thick, whereby the thick tops can also be doubled up to save weight while maintaining a massive appearance. Doubling up means that only the edge, for example, is 50 mm thick, while further inwards, you have a normal slab thickness of 25-30 mm.
Unique tables can be made from various types of wood such as oak, acacia, beech, or cherry. In any case, hardwood is used for this, as it is harder and thus the table is more resistant than the relatively soft softwood.
These unique tables can be made in a variety of styles and designs, from rustic country house style to modern industrial style. Some unique tables have additional features such as built-in drawers, an additional lower shelf for more storage space, or are equipped with a height-adjustable frame and additional tabletops.
