How to care for a live edge table or solid wood furniture?

How to properly care for a live edge table?

To care for a live edge table, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Use a damp, lint-free cloth (preferably cotton) or a sponge to regularly wipe the table and remove dust. Any residual moisture should be absorbed with a dry cloth. Avoid using sharp objects or harsh cleaning agents on the table, as these can cause scratches.
  • Immediately remove spilled liquids before moisture penetrates the wood.
  • Do not place hot or wet items on the surface – this can lead to unsightly stains.
  • Avoid exposing the table to direct sunlight or intense heat, as this can cause the wood to swell or warp.
  • Use coasters or placemats to protect the dining table from scratches and stains.
  • If the table is damaged or has scratches, you can fill and repair them with a wood repair kit or pen, or for more severe damage, restore its former beauty by sanding and refinishing the surface.

Acacia and oak wood naturally require little maintenance.
For regular cleaning of live edge tables, simply use a slightly damp, lint-free cloth and gently wipe it in the direction of the grain.

Usually, it is sufficient to wipe the table frequently with a dry cotton cloth. The soft surface of cotton cloths does not damage the wood surface and is therefore recommended for gentle care. After the table has been wet-cleaned, any residual moisture from the cleaning should be removed with a dry cloth to prevent moisture from penetrating the wood.

Under no circumstances should harsh and aggressive household cleaners or scouring milk be used for cleaning. These can cause irreparable damage to the wood.

Furthermore, hot or wet objects should not be placed on the wooden surface. This can cause unsightly, light spots in the wood that are unfortunately almost impossible to remove.

If a drink is spilled, it is important to remove the spilled liquid quickly. This is the only way to prevent the liquid from penetrating deep into the wood structure and leaving annoying permanent marks.

Also note that wood darkens over time, which is completely normal and unavoidable. Especially due to sunlight, the table will darken over time. To ensure that the table darkens evenly, it should be placed in a spot with constant light exposure across its entire surface. Otherwise, there is a risk that the table will darken unevenly.

Live edge furniture is high-quality, fits into any ambiance, and brings great enthusiasm and long-lasting joy to its owner and guests.

If the live edge table is ever damaged due to moving or heavy use, scratches can be removed by simply sanding. Depending on the processing of the tabletop, subsequent glazing, oiling, or varnishing will be applied.

Please note that different types of wood require care adapted to the specific wood. On the individual product pages in this shop, you will find information on whether the piece of furniture is varnished or oiled. Corresponding care instructions can be found in our guide article Cleaning and care for varnished or oiled solid wood surfaces.

How important is the right indoor climate for my furniture?

Temperature and humidity are factors for solid wood furniture that should not be overlooked. Because wood is a living material and is constantly working.

Acacia wood, for example, is naturally very robust and extremely resistant to fungi and pests. However, the wood reacts very sensitively to strongly fluctuating temperatures and humidity. Acacia wood feels most comfortable at constant temperatures, ideally 20 - 23 degrees Celsius, and a constant humidity of 45% to 60%.
In case of extreme temperature fluctuations or near a strong heat source (e.g., fireplace or heater), the acacia wood contracts strongly and expands again when it cools down (e.g., when the heating is turned off). This can cause the table to warp or surface damage such as cracking. Therefore, proximity to heaters and fireplaces should be avoided, and the table should not be placed directly next to a fireplace or heater.
Caution is also advised with underfloor heating, as this can also become a problem for your solid acacia wood furniture.

Oak wood is much more climate-stable and reacts less sensitively to temperature fluctuations than acacia wood.

Just like heat, humidity also has a great influence on the condition of your furniture. Not only humans suffer from dry air, but also your piece of furniture. Dry heating air makes the wood brittle and rough and can lead to increased cracking. Houseplants or a humidifier can help. These simple measures can ensure that small cracks in the wood retract again.

This small measure also has a positive effect on your well-being, and your respiratory tract and skin will thank you for it. Make your indoor climate a feel-good climate not only for yourself but also for your furniture.
